Where to Buy Unmagnetized Or Unplated Neodymium Magnet?

What Is an Unmagnetized Magnet?

An unmagnetized magnet is a magnet that has no residual magnetic flux and cannot generate a magnetic field because it has not been subjected to the magnetization process.

It is different from a demagnetized magnet because a demagnetized magnet has initially been magnetized. But at some point, it loses its magnetism to one of the demagnetization forces, including high temperature, sudden hit, and an opposing magnetic field. On the other hand, an unmagnetized magnet has never been magnetized, even though it has gone through every step of the magnet production process.

Magnetization is the final step in the manufacturing process of magnets, and it occurs after the neodymium magnets have been sliced into the desired shapes and coated. It involves placing freshly manufactured neodymium magnets in the presence of a strong magnetic field to make them magnetic.

What Is an Unplated Neodymium Magnet?

An unplated neodymium magnet is a magnet that has not been electroplated or coated with the external layers that protect it from corrosion. For neodymium magnets, the external layers are often three: nickel + copper + nickel.

Neodymium magnets are usually produced by a method known as sintering, a process in powder metallurgy where the powdered raw material is compressed at high temperatures enough to bond the particles together but still below its melting point. Because neodymium magnets are made of metals, which are highly prone to corrosion, they must be coated or plated with a different material with higher resistance against rust to extend their lifespan.

Even though the standard coating of our neodymium magnet is three layers of nickel, copper, and nickel, customers can request custom coating materials for their neodymium magnets or order naked (unplated) neodymium magnets.

How to Order Custom Unmagnetized Or Unplated Neodymium Magnets?

If you need a customized magnet for your project, provide the exact details of how you want the neodymium magnet to look.

They are:

Dimensions

You must provide the dimensions of the magnet you want because the size of a neodymium magnet is essential to its application. It becomes useless if a neodymium magnet is too big or too small for its intended use. Thus, provide the exact measurements of the dimensions of the neodymium magnet you want.

Here are the details you have to provide:

  • Length: how long do you want the neodymium magnet to be from the front to the back? e.g., 15cm.
  • Width: How wide do you want the neodymium magnet to be from left to right? E.g., 7cm.
  • Height:  Refers to measuring the neodymium magnet from the top to the base, e.g., 5cm.

For disc and cylinder magnets, you must provide the following:

  • Diameter: the diameter refers to the neodymium magnet’s surface top or bottom when measured across the center from edge to edge, e.g., 12cm.
  • Thickness: the measurement from the top edge to the bottom edge depends on the type of magnet you want.

Grade

As a customer, you must also provide their desired grade of neodymium magnet. They have different operational temperature resistance, remanence, cost, strength, and performance.

Temperature

The operating temperature of a magnet determines its use. Also, it depicts the kind of environment to work in. For instance, our lowest neodymium magnet grade, N30, has a working temperature of ≤80°C. Our maximum neodymium grade, however, has a working temperature of ≤200°C.

Magnet with Countersunk Hole

The magnet has a round shape with a countersunk hole in the middle of the flat surface. If you order custom neodymium magnets with countersunk holes, you have to provide the following details;

  • Shape: You must specify the shape of the countersink needed in their magnet. Examples include counterbore and countersunk.
  • The angle of Countersunk Hole: there are six standard angles of countersink: 60°, 82°, 90°, 100, 110°, and 120°. While 82°and 90° are the most popular, you should provide the desired angle of the countersunk hole.
  • Dimensions: for the countersunk holes to match the screw intended, you should provide dimensions for the countersunk head. These include the head diameter, fillet radius, critical engagement, head depth, and socket size.
  • Position: provide the position for the countersunk holes on the magnet, center, or elsewhere.

Tolerance

Tolerance is the notable difference between the finished magnets and the dimensions a customer requests. When ordering custom neodymium magnets, you should specify the dimensional tolerances. Ideally, you should state in “plus or minus” form, e.g., ±0.05.

You have to provide tolerance for the following:

  • Block: tolerance of length, width, and height.
  • Disc and Cylinder: tolerance of diameter, thickness.
  • Ring and Tube: tolerance of thickness and both internal and outside diameter.

Chamfering

Chamfering involves making a small cut on the magnet, often at a 45° angle. You should specify the shapes, dimensions, and angles of the chamfering.

Coating

One of the alloys that makes neodymium magnets is iron, thus leaving them prone to corrosion. The coating protects them from moisture and other elements that may interfere with their composition.

We have coated our neodymium magnets in 3 layers: nickel, copper, and nickel. You can refer to our neodymium magnets coating page for other options.

Spacer

A spacer is a material used to separate neodymium magnets to reduce the attraction between them during storage or shipment. The spacer makes it easier to detach them from one another. The stronger the neodymium magnet, the thicker the spacer.

Some materials we use for magnet spacers include plastic and heavy cardboard. If you want a unique spacer material, you should offer material requirements.

Package

We use an iron sheet magnetic isolation packaging to ship our neodymium magnets. We offer 2-3 magnetic shield packaging. If you want special packaging, you should provide dimension requirements.

Shapes of Neodymium Magnets We Can Offer Include:

Disc

Disc magnets are the most popular shape because they have a lot of applications. It is easy to shape them, and they have high strength. You can use them in the automobile industry, in hearing aids, in computers, and other electronic devices.

Because they contain neodymium-iron-boron alloy, disc magnets are several times more powerful than ordinary magnets. Discs are available in many shapes and sizes.

Discs with countersunk holes

The disc consists of neodymium, iron, and boron. The diameter of this magnet is 2 inches, and the thickness is 1 inch. It has a maximum pull force of 1,800 pounds and a minimum pull force of 250.

You can screw neodymium magnets to other objects like wooden rods or walls.

Block

Block neodymium magnets are among the popular standard shapes we have. They come in rectangles and cubes.

Cylinder

Cylinder magnets are long and circular with a rod-like appearance. Their diameter is shorter than their height, generating stronger magnetic fields. Also, they are stronger than thinner disc magnets with the same rating and diameter.

Ring

Individuals use ring magnets to produce electric motors, electromagnets, and wind turbines. A ring magnet is a cylindrical magnet with an annular shape like a doughnut. It is used in electric motors since it has a high magnetic flux density within its magnetic field.

Arc

Arc magnets are identified by their curved shape. You can find these magnets in different applications, including motors and generators.

Ball/Sphere

Ball and sphere neodymium magnets are strong because of the high magnetic field concentration, especially at the poles. They have limited applications because of their shapes and their small size.

Disc/Cylinder/Block Magnets with Countersunk Holes

Magnets with countersunk holes have a powerful working surface. Their applications include mounting, holding, and positioning furniture, items, door latches, and frames.

Irregular Magnets

These magnets are irregularly shaped and are custom-made to your specifications. Depending on your preference, you can also request a unique shape or size.

Thin Type Magnet

The thin type neodymium magnets are ideal for small applications with limited space. You can find them in products like smartphones, small radios, and earphones.

Mini Magnet

The mini magnet neodymium magnets are perfect for smaller applications where space is limited. Also, it’s ideal if you need to fit more than one magnet into an area that usually accommodates only one neodymium magnet. Examples include doorbells or windows.

These tiny little bit of magnets come in different shapes. They are almost always found in consumer products to make covers and lids for lipstick covers and jewelry boxes. They can also be found in smartphones, magnetic toys, and lipstick covers.

Fishing Magnet

Fishing magnets are round in shape. They have hooks where you can tie a rope to let the neodymium magnet down into a body of water. You can use these items to pick up lost items in drainages, rivers, and holes.

Neodymium Self-Adhesive Magnet

This is a neodymium magnet with an extra-strong 3M brand adhesive film on one of the two sides. They are used in the kitchen, office, model making, workshop, assembly, bathroom, DIY, etc.

Pin Neodymium Magnet

Pin neodymium magnets are small but have a reasonably strong magnetic force. They are used in offices to hold sheets of paper to magnetic whiteboards.

Single Big Neodymium Magnet

A single big neodymium magnet is the most significant and most robust type of neodymium magnet. At ROBO Magnetic, we make single big neodymium magnets from a piece of N52 grade neodymium, composed of two types: a magnetic rod (shape) and the other is nonmagnetic.

The magnet’s main purpose is to produce a high energy density. You can use it in various fields, including the construction industry, transportation industry, etc.

The single big neodymium magnet is powerful. You can adjust its size depending on your requirements.
